Catholic Charities USA leading relief efforts for hurricane destruction in Southeast

Hurricane Helene ripped through the Southeast in late September, causing $27 billion in damage. The deadliest storm since Hurricane Katrina has left 221 fatalities and 285 people missing. Hurricane Milton has followed, sweeping across Florida on Oct. 9.
Bishop Michael W. Fisher has asked that a second collection be held in the upcoming weeks to support relief efforts from Catholic Charities USA.
“As our nation has seen the wide-spread destruction caused by Hurricane Helene across the Southeast and Florida now braces for more devastation from Hurricane Milton, I am requesting the parishes to take up a special emergency collection for Catholic Charities USA to assist in their response efforts,” Bishop Fisher said in a letter released this week to area pastors. “Many lives have already been lost and properties, including Church properties, homes and businesses have been severely damaged or destroyed. I ask that this collection take place as soon as possible to support the humanitarian, long-term recovery, and significant Church needs arising from these calamities.”
All funds collected will be used to support the efforts of Catholic Charities USA as they and their local agencies respond to the immediate emergency needs such as providing food, shelter, medical care, and aid in long-term rebuilding and recovery efforts. Funds will be used in response to the hurricanes, subsequent flooding, and will be distributed where they are most needed.
“I know the generosity of our people and their deep care for those in need,” the bishop continued. “I ask you to join me in continuing to offer prayers for families who have lost loved ones, among those injured, and those who have lost their homes and livelihood.”
