Canisius, Hilbert introduce 4+1 in Education

Share

Canisius University is expanding its educational opportunities through a new partnership that provides undergraduate students at Hilbert College with an accelerated pathway to earning a master of science in Education (MSEd) and New York state certifications from Canisius.

Beginning in fall 2025, the 4+1 articulation agreement enables eligible Hilbert College students to begin taking six select Canisius undergraduate education courses during their sophomore year while completing their bachelor of arts degree. Qualified students who meet specific program criteria will then seamlessly transition to Canisius to complete their master’s degree in Adolescent Education (grades 7-12) and Special Education (grades K-12), which includes New York state certification in those areas. This pathway enables students to complete their advanced degree and certifications in approximately one year, compared to the conventional two-year graduate program timeline.

“This partnership represents an exciting opportunity for Hilbert students to accelerate their path to becoming certified educators,” says Nancy Wallace, Ph.D., dean of the School of Education and Human Services. “By creating this streamlined pathway, we are helping future educators save time and resources while pursuing their educational and professional goals.”

“We are thrilled to unite Hilbert’s Franciscan tradition of service with Canisius’s Ignatian rigor in education, empowering our students to become tomorrow’s impactful New York state teachers,” adds Megan Witzleben, Ph.D., chair of the Division of Arts and Letters at Hilbert College.

Canisius University has similar articulation agreements with several junior colleges including SUNY Niagara and SUNY Erie, as part of its commitment to create accessible educational pathways for students.

The School of Education and Human Services is an Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation accredited institution and recognized for preparing highly effective, socially committed professionals who value the Jesuit traditions of social justice and leadership through service. Canisius’ programs are distinguished by their small class sizes, the personalized attention students receive from expert faculty, and quality placements in schools and districts throughout the region and across the state.
