Canisius University expands academic offerings ahead of new school year

Share

Canisius University announced that it is introducing three new academic programs aimed at preparing students for careers in high-demand fields. The new programs are: a BS in biomedical science; a 4+1 degree that includes a BS in mathematics leading to an MS in data analytics; and a 4+1 degree that includes a BS in psychology leading to a master’s degree in data analytics.

“Canisius is committed to equipping students with the knowledge and skills essential for success in today’s competitive job market,” said interim Vice President for Academic Affairs Joe Delap, Ph.D., “These new academic programs offer innovative educational pathways that are aligned with industry demands and designed to ensure our graduates are well-prepared to make a meaningful impact in their chosen fields.”

The undergraduate degree in biomedical science equips students for dynamic careers in health care, allied health and research. The program integrates scientific training with ethical instruction to foster a foundation of integrity and responsibility. Drawing on the expertise of faculty from Canisius’ distinguished science departments – including biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, psychology and sociology – the program offers a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the complexities of human health and disease. Throughout, students will engage in hands-on laboratory work, collaborate with faculty mentors on research, and participate in internship opportunities that provide real-world experiences.

“Biomedical science is a field ripe with opportunities for discovery and innovation,” noted Delap. “This new program prepares graduates to pursue advanced studies in medicine, dentistry, public health and physician assistant studies, and prepares them to lead in the field’s rapidly evolving landscape.”

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, careers related to biomedical science earn a median salary that is more than two times the average for all workers. Additionally, the field is projected to grow faster than the average for other jobs through the next decade.

Canisus University is also introducing a pair of 4+1 degree programs for students eager to fast-track their education and career prospects.

The 4+1 degree in mathematics and data analytics is designed to meet the demand for skilled professions in the fields of data science and analytics., which is projected to grow 35 percent by 2032. This unique program enables students to earn a bachelor of science in mathematics and a master of science in data analytics in just five years, providing a streamlined pathway to advanced education and career readiness.

The program offers rigorous training in a wide range of mathematical concepts, theories and methods leading to essential skill development in problem-solving, logical reasoning, and the ability to effectively communicate complex ideas. These skills are crucial underpinnings for the study of data analytics, in which students learn how to analyze data and present their findings in ways that help business, institutions, nonprofits and other organizations make key decisions. The program couples this technical expertise with an education in written and oral communication, teamwork and critical thinking – leadership skills that will empower graduates to thrive in the professional world.

Canisius University’s new 4+1 degree in psychology and data analytics is the second accelerated advanced degree program offered by the department. This new area of study educates students about the human mind and behavior through a combination of theoretical study and practical applications. They also gain skills in research methods, critical thinking and effective communication. Students then leverage these skills in the data analytics program, where they learn to digest complex datasets to uncover behavioral patterns, identify social trends, and inform policy decisions.

The 4+1 in mathematics and data analytics and the 4+1 in psychology and data analytics are two of the newest accelerated advanced degree programs offered at Canisius. The university is also home to accelerated programs in chiropractic care, law, computer science and cybersecurity, and psychology and social work.

“One of Canisus University’s strategic priorities is to develop more innovative academic offerings that align with the evolving needs of our students and the workforce,” added Delap. “By offering streamlined pathways to advanced degrees, students are able to reach their professional goals faster and enter the workforce sooner, saving valuable time and expense.”
