A Dedicated Education Unit (DEU) provides Trocaire College RN students an optimal learning environment.
The Registered Nursing program at Trocaire College in Buffalo and the nursing staff at Mercy Hospital in South Buffalo have joined in a Clinical Educational Service Partnership called a Dedicated Education Unit.
A Dedicated Education Unit provides Trocaire College registered nursing students an optimal learning environment. Through the collaborative efforts of Mercy staff nurses, management, and the Trocaire College RN faculty, the clinical setting is designed to provide students with a positive learning environment that maximizes the achievement of student learning outcomes.
This opportunity utilizes proven teaching and learning strategies, and capitalizes on the expertise of both the nursing staff and Trocaire RN faculty. While the traditional approach of Trocaire’s clinical experiences assigns one Trocaire nursing faculty member to supervise and provide clinical education to eight students, the DEU model allows specially trained Mercy Hospital nurses to share their clinical experience and knowledge with one to two Trocaire student nurses, providing personalized attention and instruction.
“This newest academic-community partnership with Catholic Health will provide Trocaire students with a clinical experience that will help them make the transition from a student nurse to a graduate nurse,” said Mary Ann Deb, Trocaire RN clinical coordinator.
Four Mercy Hospital staff nurses, Madonna Shriver, Deana Lambert, Sherry Rico and Britt Nowak, will work directly with Trocaire RN students as both coach and mentor.
This partnership will provide an ideal learning environment for the next generation of nurses.
The DEU program is the first such effort involving a two-year nursing program and Catholic Health.
