Church mourns passing of Msgr. Rupert Wright

Msgr. Rupert A. Wright, P.A. passed away July 3, at Brothers of Mercy Nursing Home in Clarence.

The former pastor of St. Gregory the Great Parish in Williamsville, the largest parish in the Diocese of Buffalo, Msgr. Wright retired from active ministry in 2006.  The Jamestown, N.Y. native was born Jan.16, 1930, attended parochial schools and graduated from the Seminary of Our Lady of Angels at Niagara University in 1956.  He was ordained to the priesthood on May 26, 1956, by Bishop Joseph A. Burke.

Upon learning of Msgr. Wright's passing, Bishop Edward U. Kmiec said, "Msgr. Wright was a faithful priest who was dedicated to helping to develop and grow the faith lives of others. His legacy lives on through the people he ministered to, his humble example of priestly service to others and his devotion to the Catholic Church. May our Heavenly Father grant him eternal rest." 

The funeral will take place at St. Gregory the Great Church in Williamsville on Saturday Morning, July 7 at 10:00 a.m. with the Most Rev. Edward M. Grosz, Celebrant. Msgr. Wright will lie in state at St. Gregory the Great Church, 200 St. Gregory Court, Williamsville, N.Y. and visiting hours will be on Thursday, July 5 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m and 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Friday, July 6 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 pm. and 7:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. as well as on Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m. until 9:45 a.m.

Msgr. Wright served in a number of parishes in the Diocese of Buffalo,including the missionary apostolate of the Cattaraugus and Allegheny Indian Reservations; St. Isidore (East Otto); St. Stephen (Grand Island); St. Mary Magdalene (Buffalo); St. John the Evangelist (Buffalo);  St. James Major (Westfield) and St. Amelia (Tonawanda).  He was diocesan coordinator of the Priests' Personnel Board, president of the Senate of Priests, and a member of the Priests' Retirement Board, Priests' Personnel  Board, Diocesan Pastoral Council, Diocesan  Advisory Council, Television Advisory Board and the Cardinal O'Hara High School board of trustees.  He was episcopal vicar of Northern Erie County from 1996 to 2006.
Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Jamestown, N.Y. Msgr. Wright was the beloved son of the late Catherine M. (Barrett) and Rupert A. Wright, Sr. He is a dear brother of Dr. Richard M. (Carolyn) Wright and the late Julian B. Wright.
