Oct15 Father Moreno's death shocks community

When somebody unexpectedly dies, it leaves those survivors left behind searching for answers by asking, “Why?” It is now what many people in Buffalo’s St. Lawrence Parish community and throughout the diocese are asking after a beloved priest, Father Joseph F. Moreno, Jr., was found dead Saturday after an apparent suicide.

Sep7 Bike ride seeks to raise funds for World Youth Day

On Sept. 22, instead of just pedaling to get your heart pumping, you can pedal for a purpose as well.  Christ Our Hope Parish in Sherman is holding its third CREEKSIDE RIDE: Pedal for Pilgrims. The bike ride will help raise funds to defray costs of World Youth Day 2013 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Aug23 Villa Maria College helps feed starving children this fall

According to Feed My Starving Children, a non-profit Christian organization, a child dies from hunger-related causes every five seconds.  This fall, Villa Maria College will be doing something to combat that statistic. On Sept. 21 and 22, the college will host a Feed My Starving Children MobilePack event.

Aug22 Catholic League Appeal: Continued support for Church of Poland

The founding of the Catholic League will mark its 70th anniversary on April 28, 2013. In May 1943, 76 priests, representing 15 dioceses and prominent laity, met at the Hotel Lafayette in Buffalo ratifying the purpose of the new organization, formally adopting a constitution and at that time choosing Detroit as the location of the national office.

Kathleen Heffern has been a familiar face for almost the entire history of the Catholic Center building downtown, serving as the longtime director of the Office of Church Ministry, and more recently, Parish Life. A 26-year career comes to a close next month when she retires.

Aug9 Bishop Malone serves on board of Catholic Relief Services

One of the many hats Bishop Richard J. Malone wears is that of being a board member for Catholic Relief Services. While serving on the board, he has traveled twice to be on the front line and examine the work of CRS. Ken Hackett, former president of CRS, went with Bishop Malone to Haiti in 2011 and Central Africa (Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Burundi) in 2010. Both times, he said, served as an invaluable experience for Bishop Malone.
