Ken-Ton parishes share ‘Catholicism in backyard’

When the parishes of the Kenmore-Tonawanda area sought ways to recognize the “Year in Faith” they needed to look no further than their own backyard. They now invite people from the diocese to explore the diocese and discover the richness of art, culture and faith offered in Western New York. Through a series of field trips to key sites in the Diocese of Buffalo and a few guest speakers, the Ken-Ton group hopes to educate and entertain guests as they get to know, what they call, “Catholicism in Our Backyard.” read more...

Father Moreno's death shocks community

When somebody unexpectedly dies, it leaves those survivors left behind searching for answers by asking, “Why?” It is now what many people in Buffalo’s St. Lawrence Parish community and throughout the diocese are asking after a beloved priest, Father Joseph F. Moreno, Jr., was found dead Saturday after an apparent suicide.

St. Stephen's wraps up anniversary with formal and Mass

St. Stephen Parish of Grand Island is in the final months of celebrating its 150th anniversary, and the longtime Catholic community still has a few more events lined up. St. Stephen Parish is the oldest Catholic community on Grand Island.

Audience impressed with installation Mass

On Aug. 10, the Buffalo Diocese received a new shepherd. Amongst more than 1,000 people in St. Joseph Cathedral, Bishop Richard J. Malone was installed as Buffalo’s 14th bishop. During the Mass, religious, lay people and even people of different faiths welcomed Bishop Malone with song, prayer and an attentive ear. Likewise, the bishop inspired and assured with his blessings and words.

This year, Father Baker Day will be a little more patriotic. After the noon Mass on Sunday, July 29, a Civil War medal will be presented in Venerable Nelson Baker’s honor. Before beginning a life of priesthood in 1869, Father Baker served in the 74th Regiment New York State Militia during the Civil War, thus entitled to the medal.

Blessed Trinity, Buffalo, to glorify beauty with upcoming concert

Blessed Trinity Parish in Buffalo will conclude its 2011-12 Trinity Series of “beautiful music in a beautiful space,” with a special concert by The Camerata di Sant’ Antonio, made possible by a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts. The concert will take place July 22 at 2:30 p.m., with a pre-concert tour of the building beginning at 1:30.

Lawn fete supplies fun, also brings parish together

Father Baker Museum welcomes new artifacts

Open for a few years now, the Father Baker Museum located in the basement of Our Lady of Victory Basilica in Lackawanna has added several new exhibits and artifacts, the highlight of which is a silk chasuble, an outer liturgical vestment, which was worn by the Venerable Nelson Baker during his life.
