West Seneca parish marks anniversary of adoration chapel

Fourteen Holy Helpers Parish in West Seneca celebrated the 10-year anniversary of its Eucharistic adoration chapel on Sunday, March 10, with Mass and a reception.

The a cappella group Harmonia Chamber Singers will team with the Ars Nova Musicians Chamber Orchestra and St. Joseph Cathedral Choir to present Morten Lauridsen’s orchestral masterpiece, “Lux Aeterna,” during a special one-time only concert on March 10 at the cathedral in downtown Buffalo.

Saint plays part in parish’s Year of Faith plans

St. Christopher Parish in Tonawanda has taken a page out of the classic children’s book “Flat Stanley” to celebrate the Year of Faith. The 1964 book by Jeff Brown tells the story of a boy who, after being flattened by a bulletin board, gets to experience adventures a normal boy could not. At St. Christopher’s, parishioners and students used photographs of St. Christopher and their faith to take them to special places. read more...

On Oct. 11, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI declared that a “Year of Faith” would begin on Oct. 11, 2012, and conclude on Nov. 24, 2013. During the year, Catholics are asked to study and reflect on the documents of Vatican II and the Catechism so that they may deepen their knowledge of the faith. read more...
New priest to serve in new ordinariate

The Vatican has paved the way for Anglicans to be in full communion with the Catholic Church. On Jan. 1 of last year, Pope Benedict XVI established the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter, which allows Anglicans in the United States and Canada to be fully Catholic, while still retaining their Anglican liturgical heritage and traditions. Similar ordinariates exist in the United Kingdom and Australia. read more...
St. Lawrence Parish looks to honor Father Moreno with pantry

Father Joseph Moreno’s sudden death late last year shocked many in the community, especially those of St. Lawrence Parish in Buffalo where he was serving as sacramental minister. Now the St. Lawrence community is looking to celebrate Father Moreno’s ministry by renaming the pantry after him.

Parish program fosters inclusion for all

By definition catholic means universal or involving all. So the Catholic Church should be equally inclusive. When the religious education office of St. Jude Parish realized that some young people with developmental disabilities were not receiving their sacraments, a new special education program needed to be created. read more...
Buffalo youth lead Washington March for Life

This year marks 40 years of legalized abortion. The infamous Roe v. Wade decision of Jan. 22, 1973, deemed abortion a fundamental right under the Constitution. Almost immediately a grassroots pro-life group led by attorney Nellie Gray began a protest march in front of the Capitol and Supreme Court buildings. The March for Life continues to grow annually, with an estimated 500,000 people taking part this year. read more...
Bishop Malone to ordain married Catholic priest

Bishop Richard J. Malone will ordain Rev. Mr. John Cornelius to the priesthood on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 5 p.m., at Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville, for the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter. The ordinariate is for those groups of Anglicans in the United States who seek to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church.

Catholic Charities seeks $10.7 million goal during Appeal 2013

During a Jan. 8 press conference Bishop Richard J. Malone took his place as president of Catholic Charities of Buffalo to announce the goal as well as the theme and patron of the 2013 Appeal. Bishop Malone revealed a goal set for $10.7 million to fund Catholic Charities’ programs at 61 sites across the eight counties of Western New York. read more...
