Teachers challenged to adapt in changing world of education

Educators across the diocese were encouraged to plug in and explore new ways of teaching during a staff development day for teachers. Held in October at Samuel’s Grande Manor in Clarence, the event drew 1,000 teachers, principals and administrators from the dioceses of Buffalo and Rochester.

Students for Life to host rally at O’Hara

Students for Life of America will bring its northeastern divisional meeting to Western New York to motivate and empower young pro-life activists in the area. Students for Life focuses on getting students engaged in their campuses and community. Catechetical leaders face challenges of secular society

After almost two years of being in the works, “The Catechetical Leader in the Third Millennium,” was published and implemented on Sept. 27 at a meeting in the Diocese of Brooklyn. The document, written by New York state bishops in collaboration with diocesan directors of religious education, will serve as a blueprint for dioceses of Region 2 in New York state.

Niagara Catholic welcomes middle school students

Niagara Falls offers unique learning opportunities for those who choose Catholic education. Not only does it now house the only joint junior/senior high school in the diocese, but partnerships with Niagara University and Mount St. Mary Hospital give students a head start on their college careers. On June 1, 2011, the diocesan Catholic schools strategic plan, “Faith in Tomorrow” was promulgated. Aptly named, this plan outlined the goals and strategies necessary to “re-found” our Catholic elementary schools paying close attention to our Catholic mission, rigorous academics and sound business practices.

It seems number 2 pencils have gone the way of slide rules in South Buffalo. Bishop Timon-St. Jude High School has become synonymous with high tech as the entire study body will be receiving laptops this year. The school embraces technology as a way to better educate its students.

Nativity School welcomes back students with iPads

Pencils are passé nowadays. The scribblings of the old number 2s have been replaced with the click click of computer keyboards and the silent touchscreen zooms of tablets. Upper-grade students at Nativity of Our Lord School in Orchard Park are among the students embracing technology in the classroom, as they add iPads to their basic equipment list. read more...
