Tears, sadness, and even the Twitter hashtag #SaveHAA have followed the announcement that Holy Angels Academy, the private all-girls high school located in North Buffalo, would close in June. Students were told in an assembly on April 30, which was quickly followed by a rally where the 240 students began chants asking for their school to be saved. read more...

More than 10,000 people, mostly Catholic school students, attended an “Invest in Education” rally at the First Niagara Center in downtown Buffalo Wednesday morning to support legislation that would provide tax credits for school expenses and donations.

The Education Investment Tax Credit Bill, designed to boost investment in New York’s private and public schools, is expected to draw approximately 10,000 students, parents, teachers and supporters from non-public schools to rally in support of the bill on April 10, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the First Niagara Center in Buffalo.

School Choice bus makes ‘Whistle Stop’ in diocese

As part of National School Choice Week, the Catholic Schools Department and the New York State Catholic Conference sponsored a “Whistle Stop” breakfast reception at Statler City in downtown Buffalo in February to bring attention to school choice initiatives in the area. Bishop Richard J. Malone spoke, as did representatives from private schools in the area and school choice advocates.

Catholic education advocates push for tax credit legislation

While the bill has stalled in the New York State Legislature several times, advocates of Catholic education are still supporting a proposed law that would provide tax credits to families paying private school tuition and encourage corporate and personal donations to schools and scholarships.

Providing more Catholic and other families with the option a Catholic education is a priority for the Diocese of Buffalo and the seven other dioceses across New York. We need a long-term solution that will allow our schools to stabilize and then grow, making sure they are here for generations to come.

Orth, an author and special correspondent for Vanity Fair, delivered the keynote address at the Jan. 31 dinner, held at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center. read more...
