Christ the King Seminary prepares African men for priesthood

Among the 20 men learning about philosophy, theology and morality at Christ the King Seminary are two thirtysomethings fascinated by, of all things, snow. Coming from Nigeria, these two have never seen the white flakes that are so common to Western New York. What they do recognize is the need for priests in the United States. Vocation coordinators help get the word out for priests

The USCCB-produced document, “Program for Priestly Formation,” states the whole Church is responsible for vocations through prayer and encouragement. This certainly takes pressure off pastors, who already have a lot on their plates with the caring for their church, school and parishioners. That’s why Father Walter Szczesny, director of vocations for the diocese, is reaching out to pews for help, asking people to become vocation coordinators.

Latino community excited, surprised by election of new pope

Just after 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6, an email went out to the staff members of the Catholic Center saying simply, “White smoke!!!” Many gathered in front of televisions and computer monitors, waiting impatiently to hear the name of the 266th pope.
