Bishop Malone leaves a strong legacy in Portland

PORTLAND, Maine — Although he only served in Portland for eight years, Bishop Richard J. Malone remade quite a bit of the diocese during his time here, restructuring parishes and launching a multi-million dollar capital campaign to better support Catholic programs.

This year, Father Baker Day will be a little more patriotic. After the noon Mass on Sunday, July 29, a Civil War medal will be presented in Venerable Nelson Baker’s honor. Before beginning a life of priesthood in 1869, Father Baker served in the 74th Regiment New York State Militia during the Civil War, thus entitled to the medal.

Friends of St. Peregrine reach out to cancer patients

It began with the wish of a dying pastor. As seven of his close friends approached him toward the end of his life, they asked what could be done in his memory. Denying a scholarship or donations, Father Robert Dmitri simply answered that he wanted them to spread the message of St. Peregrine, patron saint of cancer patients. One month after Father Dmitri passed away from cancer in 1991, his seven friends took his request to heart and formed the Friends of St. Peregrine.

WNY Catholic wins 4 CPA awards

The Western New York Catholic newspaper picked up four Catholic Press Association awards for 2012, extending a seven-year win streak for the monthly diocesan paper, which has now been honored nine out of the last 10 years.
